A West suburban man has been shot and killed by a police officer during a traffic stop in Westchester County.
Police said a man, later identified as 34-year-old Joshua Wiel, was found with a gunshot wound in the 700 block of South Washington Street shortly after midnight.
The shooting remains under investigation.
The shooting comes as the city is under new police oversight.
The U.S. Justice Department is reviewing whether the city has the necessary training and equipment to deal with the growing number of shootings in the area.
Police were responding to a report of a shooting.
They found Wiel unresponsive and unresponsive in his vehicle, police said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A statement released by Westchester police said Wiel had been arrested on warrants for disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and assault with a deadly weapon.
Police also released video footage from surveillance cameras showing Wiel walking away from officers, striking the hood of his police car and running across the street.
Wiel was arrested at his home on Tuesday and booked into the Westchester District Jail, police reported.
He has a previous history of domestic violence.
